This northern society is affected by the legacy of colonialism, which suffers from widespread drug abuse, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and one of the highest juvenile killings in the world. The students are naturally skeptical when Russ Sheppard, another ignorant and unprepared white rookie teacher, arrives from the South on a one-year teaching contract. With much to learn but deeply shocked by the death of one of his students, Russ introduces his class to lacrosse sports in an attempt to lift the dangerous fog of trauma found in his students. While students were initially resilient, students would gradually become familiar with the sport, form Team Grizzlies and find inspiration in making a difference in their lives. Based on true history, the Grizzlies are more than a common triumph in the history of sports because they do not escape the moving images of poverty and isolation that characterize many northern communities. When teacher Russ Shepard first comes to Kugluktuk, he brings with him imaginative perceptions of northern life and no small trash about his self-imposed mission to bring about change. However, an interconnected chain of dramatic incidents (and some quieter cross-cultural corrections) make Russe realize that education is a two-way street. Initially, the fast-paced lacrosse team seemed a little funafter school, but soon became a lighter rod for communities with different visions of its future. Led by the remarkable performances of Nunavut’s young cast and seeds of inaccessible authenticity due to their dramatic location, the Grizzlies prove to be one of the most unexpectedly confirming films of the year.
